RICHMOND, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — Henrico County police say a Richmond man has been charged with a misdemeanor after a 13-year-old student brought a gun to school.
Lt. Linda Toney says in a news release that 26-year-old Jimmy Cunningham II was charged with reckless handling of a firearm.
The male student was taking into custody after bringing the gun to Wilder Middle School in Henrico earlier this month.
Police say the school was locked down after officials received information the student may have been carrying a gun. A resource officer discovered the boy was carrying a loaded magazine in his pants pocket when he was confronted in the cafeteria. Authorities later discovered an unloaded handgun in the student’s book bag in another part of the school.
The student was charged with possession of a firearm on school property.
The statement says Cunningham is an acquaintance of the student’s family. Police declined to specify how the youth got the gun.
