RICHMOND, Va. — A debate between Japan and South Korea over what to call the body of water that separates the two countries is being played out in the Virginia Capitol.
The South Korean ambassador to the U.S. is in Richmond to meet with lawmakers and Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
The General Assembly is currently considering a bill that would direct the state’s board of education to only approve textbooks that note the Sea of Japan is also called the East Sea.
Korean Americans who live in Northern Virginia have pressed for the name change while the Japanese ambassador has urged McAuliffe to oppose it, The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1b8xzWY) reported Wednesday.
A House education committee is scheduled to discuss the proposal Thursday afternoon.
