LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A lawsuit filed against a Virginia woman who posted a negative online review of a D.C.-based construction contractor went to trial Monday.
In her single-star review of Dietz Development LLC on Yelp.com, Jane Perez wrote that the work done to her home in 2011 had to be re-done and that she suspected workers of stealing jewelry while on her property.
In 2012, the firm sued Perez for defamation in Fairfax County Circuit Court. The company is seeking $750,000 in damages from Perez, who also advised potential customers of the business not to hire what she called a “nightmare of a contractor.”
In December 2012, a Fairfax County judge ordered Perez to delete some of her accusations while the lawsuit was pending. The state’s Supreme Court later reversed that order, after the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia filed a petition for review.
Christopher Dietz, who was hired to paint, refinish floors and do some electrical, plumbing and handyman work, claims the firm had a good reputation before Perez bashed it online, according to a Washington Post report.
