Popularity Gap Between NFL and MLB Widened In 2013

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Make no bones about it — the NFL is king of professional sports in America. Nay, it’s the king of ALL sports in America.

A poll conducted by Harris Interactive shows the popularity gap between professional football and all other sports continued to widen in 2013 as the game extended a nearly three-decade reign atop the U.S. sports throne.

Thirty-five percent of those surveyed last month said pro football was their favorite sport while baseball ranked a distance second with 14 percent. College football nearly matched the popularity of Major League Baseball as 11 percent of poll takers said they lived for Saturday afternoons.

Since 1985, pro football’s popularity has increased by 11 percent while baseball has experience a nine percent decline in popularity. The popularity of college pigskin has remained relatively consistent with just a one percent rise in nearly 30 years.

Interestingly, the poll also shows auto racing leads the NBA in popularity by four percentage points.

4.) Auto Racing – 7%
5.) Professional Basketball – 6%
6.) Hockey – 5%

The Harris Poll surveyed 2,311 adults.
