LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Gluten-free foods have been slowly creeping onto supermarket shelves for years now, but for the first time ever, “gluten-free” labels will now be found on the sides of some Girl Scout cookie boxes.
For now, the celiac-friendly sweets will only be found in certain areas, and central Maryland is one of them. Girl Scouts of Central Maryland serves Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties.
“Since it’s estimated that three million people have problems when they eat foods that contain gluten, ABC and our council partners expect this cookie to be a huge success,” the Girl Scout cookie bakery said in a release.

The Girl Scouts bakery says it will conduct research during and after this year’s cookie sales to determine whether to go national with the gluten-free option.
