LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A man has died after being struck by a garbage truck in Northwest early Friday morning.

Metropolitan Police say the man became trapped under the rear wheels of the vehicle after being hit around 4:40 a.m. in the 1200 block of New York Avenue NW.

The unidentified man was conscious and breathing as first responders pulled them from under the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries Friday evening.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are being investigated.

The driver of the truck remained on the scene.

13th Street reopened after authorities closed the roadway for nearly three hours in both directions between H Street and I Street as they conducted an investigation.

The accident comes just hours after a University of Maryland student was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in College Park.
