Lee-Jackson Day Celebrated in Virginia
LEXINGTON, Va. — Virginia’s unique Lee-Jackson holiday is being marked in Lexington, where both Confederate icons are buried.
The Stonewall Brigade of the Sons of Confederate Veterans plans a series of events Friday and Saturday in memory of Gens. Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. A symposium Friday will examine the legacy of both men, while a memorial will be held Saturday in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery.
A parade will follow the memorial through downtown Lexington. A Civil War-period dance will be held Saturday night.
During outdoor events, participants are asked to carry a U.S., Virginia or a Confederate flag. The brigade says the flag request is intended as a protest of Lexington’s decision to banish the flying of the Confederate flag on city light poles.
