ROCKVILLE, Md. (CBSDC) — A man has died after a fire ripped through an apartment complex in Rockville.

The blaze began inside an apartment building located in the 5200 block of Crossfield Court around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, officials say.

A man pulled from the blaze was taken to the hospital and later died, Montgomery County Fire spokesperson Scott Graham says. He has been identified as 54-year-old Michael Francis Mercurio.

It is unclear whether there was a working smoke alarm inside the apartment where the fire began, but authorities confirm alarms were inoperable in adjacent dwellings.

A woman who lives inside the building says she only became aware of the blaze after her dog began barking incessantly.

The Red Cross is working to assist residents of 29 units displaced by the fire.

Officials say the fire caused an estimated $40,000 in damages and remains under investigation.
