Up and Down Temps Exacerbating Pothole Problems

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Roadside “hubcap graveyards” may see a surge of new additions this winter.

WNEW’s George Mesthos reports that local transportation departments are expecting to see a lot more potholes forming on the region’s roads this season, up to three times the amount of previous years.

Channel 9 meteorologist Erica Grow tells WNEW that “freeze and thaw cycles,” which have already been common this winter, definitely exacerbate pothole problems.

Joan Morris, with the Virginia Department of Transportation, says they are taking care of more than 100 potholes this week alone.

Maryland’s State Highway Administration says potholes can form in just minutes.
