WASHINGTON — Mayor Vincent Gray has launched a re-election campaign that he hopes will be different from his bid four years ago in all but one respect: the end result.

Gray’s 2010 campaign against then-mayor Adrian Fenty was rife with criminal activity, resulting in guilty pleas by four aides to Gray in two separate schemes to help get him elected. A federal investigation is ongoing.

In his prepared remarks to supporters, Gray apologized Saturday “for the pain and embarrassment” caused by his previous campaign. But he also says “it is time to turn the page.”

The Democratic mayor is seeking re-election against several challengers, including four D.C. councilmembers. The primary is April 1, leaving the mayor with little time to make his case to voters.
