Chief: Officer Death Appears to Be Suicide
WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — District of Columbia Police Chief Cathy Lanier says a police officer who died after being charged with child pornography last month appears to have committed suicide.
Lanier discussed the arrests of Officers Marc Washington and Linwood Barnhill Jr. at a town hall-style meeting Thursday night.
Washington’s body was pulled from the Washington Channel soon after he was released from custody. Lanier said all indications are that the death was a suicide.
Barnhill, a 24-year-veteran of the force, was arrested on charges of running a prostitution operation out of his apartment.
Both officers were from the department’s seventh district, where Lanier spoke Thursday.
She told the crowd that the department had uncovered no broader corruption within the district, and there are no signs other officers were involved in the incidents.
WNEW’s Cameron Thompson says police have found an adult victim in Officer Washington’s case — in addition to a 15-year-old girl — and police are investigating if there are any other victims. Lanier said there were no indications that may have told police Washington was involved in misconduct.
Police also found two other victims, a teenage girl and an adult, in the incident involving Barnhill. Lanier added there were no serious warning signs from Barnhill’s performance record to show any concern.
