Child Killed in Montgomery County Apartment Fire

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — A four-year-old boy was killed and several others were injured in a fire at an apartment complex in Montgomery County, authorities say.
Firefighters were called to Cider Mill Apartments in the 18200 block of Lost Knife Circle in Montgomery Village just after 4 p.m. Wednesday. The two-alarm blaze engulfed a garden-style apartment.
Authorities say one person was trapped on a third-floor balcony and had to be rescued by firefighters who used a ladder to reach him. He was transported to a local specialty center with life-threatening injuries.
A second man was transported to a local specialty center with unknown injuries. Two children were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
More than 80 firefighters were called to the scene of the fire.
Twelve apartments were damaged by the fire and 40 residents have been displaced.
The American Red Cross and the apartment’s property management office are assisting residents displaced by the fire.
Officials have still not yet been able to determined the cause of the fire although investigators have determined building damages are estimated at $750,000 and $300,000 for personal property.
