AVENUE, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was injured after his patrol vehicle hit a deer, overturned and landed in a ditch filled with water.

It happened about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday on Oakley Road in Avenue. Deputies say Sgt. Robert Russell was traveling north when a deer entered the road and the vehicle hit it.

Authorities say the deer became lodged under the patrol car, preventing it from being steered. Police say the vehicle left the road and overturned in a water-filled ditch, trapping Russell inside.

Emergency responders freed Russell, who was treated and released at a local hospital.
