LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — D.C.’s 2013 homicide rate was up 17 percent from 2012, according to Metropolitan Police Department statistics.

The large jump was mostly due to the Washington Navy Yard rampage, during which 34-year-old former Navy reservist Aaron Alexis shot and killed 12 people.

Police say 103 people were murdered in the District in 2013, compared with 88 the year before.

Despite the increase, the homicide rate was still lower than in previous years. In 2003, for example, there were 248 murders in the city. In 1993, there were 454.
