FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Authorities in Stafford County say a man is dead after being hit by a fire truck that was on its way to the scene of a car crash.

Authorities say the man was struck around 8:40 p.m. Friday as he was crossing Warrenton Road, a six-lane roadway in Fredericksburg.

The sheriff’s office says the man was in a darkened portion of the road and outside a crosswalk. The sheriff’s office says the fire truck’s driver tried unsuccessfully to avoid hitting the man. He died at a hospital.

The pedestrian’s name has not been released. The fire truck was on its way to the scene of a car crash on nearby I-95.
