CHICAGO — Heading to the store to return a Christmas gift? Better not wait.

That’s according to the Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois.

The consumer advocacy group says some retailers are shortening the amount of time customers have to return items. The group says most of the changes impact electronics and appliances.

Steve Bernas is the group’s president and CEO.

He says some shoppers may be used to having 45 days to return some items. But now that window’s shortened to 30 days. In some cases, it can even be as few as nine days.

Bernas says consumers should make sure they know a store’s return policy and be prepared by saving receipts and an item’s original packaging.
