WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — The U.S. Navy says it will add a new main entrance and a memorial area to the building in Washington where a gunman killed 12 workers in September.

A spokeswoman said Monday that Navy Secretary Ray Mabus has chosen a proposal that will keep Naval Sea Systems Command headquartered in Navy Yard Building 197. She says the interior will be renovated and repainted to give it a brighter look.

The Navy expects to award the contract next month, and the work is scheduled to be completed in early 2015.

Information technology contractor Aaron Alexis fatally shot 12 people inside the building Sept. 16 before he was killed by police.
