LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Peter O’Toole, the actor perhaps most well-known for playing the titular role in the 1962 film “Lawrence of Arabia,” has died.

Steve Kenis, O’Toole’s agent, tells CBS News that the Irish-born entertainer died Saturday at a hospital after battling a lengthy illness.

O’Toole got his first Oscar nomination “Lawrence of Arabia” while his most recent nod was for the 2006 film “Venus.”

It is well known that he survived stomach cancer in the 1970s.
