WELLINGTON, New Zealand (CBS DC) – He didn’t think things would get this out of hand.
That’s what New Zealander Reese McKee tells the New Zealand Herald.
Reese gained Interet fame when his request for help finding a missed connection went viral earlier this month.
The 25-year-old launched a Facebook campaign asking for help tracking down a woman he spent last New Year’s Eve with in Hong Kong.
The only solid information he had was that her name was Katie and she was from Washington D.C.
And he had taken a picture of her on his phone.
Reese says he didn’t expect his quest to get as much attention as it did.
“It turned into a massive ‘let’s stalk every Katie in the DC area’. I was trying to get people to stop that, but with 2000 plus people messaging … it got a bit out of hand,” he told the paper.
His search was picked up by websites like Gawker, Slate and The Daily Mail.
The end result was that just about every woman named Katie in the D.C. area found herself the object of unwanted attention.
The mystery girl has been tracked down. “We found the girl. She is from DC, she’s not there at the moment, but she’s sorta taken down all her public profiles for a bit, said McKee”
But he hasn’t contacted her yet. McKee says he’s waiting for all the attention to die down before he reaches out.
“I’m just looking to settle it down. It was a hell of a lot of pressure, after the second day it sort of dawned on me that if I was going through this much, then there was going to be an incredible wave of pressure slammed into her,” he told the paper.
“I suppose she’s sort of gone offline for a bit. It’s understandably overwhelming.”
