WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – Tuesday Vice President Joe Biden maintained the United States’ commitment to fight against the concentrated effort to “delegitimize Israel.”

“The preservation of an independent Jewish state is the only certain guarantor of freedom and security for the Jewish people,” Biden told the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) at a Washington event to celebrate the group’s 100th anniversary according to CBS News.

Biden explained that the most serious threat to Israel’s long-term security and viability is the “wholesale effort in other parts of the world” to delegitimize the Jewish state.

The United States’ vetoes against United Nations resolutions that Biden believes would undercut Israel, he noted. Biden also stated that no other president “has done more to secure the state of Israel and its physical needs than President Barack Obama.”

Recently, Israel has been extremely critical of Obama’s efforts to strike a deal that would roll back Iran’s nuclear program.

CBS News reported that a “special envoy” within the Health and Human Services Department will be appointed and “charged with reaching out across agencies to determine what resources nonprofits like the JDC need to effectively deliver services to people living poverty.”
