Norton, Cummings to Attend Mandela Memorial in South Africa
WASHINGTON — Congressman Elijah Cummings of Maryland and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton of the District of Columbia will be part of the Congressional delegation attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service in South Africa.
Cummings was scheduled to depart Sunday, while Norton planned to leave early Monday morning.
Norton says Mandela was “a freedom-defining fighter for me and others throughout the world.” She was one of the four activists whose visit to the South African Embassy in 1984 sparked a series of protests there against apartheid.
Norton and Cummings will join President Barack Obama, former president George W. Bush and other dignitaries at a memorial service in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
