LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A man was shot and killed and a police officer was injured during a shootout in the Trinidad neighborhood of the District Tuesday night, police say.

The man was identified as Darius Jamal Murphy, 19, of NE. He exchanged fire with police officers, injuring one officer before being shot himself.

Authorities say the shooting occurred near Gallaudet University in the 1300 block of Queen Street NE shortly after 9 p.m.

Those who live on the block, which is crowded by row houses and apartments, say as many as 20 shots were exchanged.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says the officer works in the department’s gun recovery unit, tasked with recovering illegal firearms.

Both men were transported to local area hospitals, where Murphy was later pronounced dead.

The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries during the gun battle and has been released from the hospital, according to multiple reports.

The shooting remains under investigation.
