BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Sen. Charles Schumer says an understaffed Buffalo border is to blame for lane closures and backups that result in long wait times that are not only frustrating to drivers but detrimental to the local economy.

Schumer is calling Monday for Customs and Border Protection to increase the number of border agents in Buffalo. He says local border and Peace Bridge Authority officials estimate that as many as 60 agents have been cut from the Buffalo Border in the past 18 months.

Schumer cites a University of Southern California report that says for every additional agent at a U.S. Port of Entry, the local economy sees a $2 million boost and 33 new jobs.

The Peace Bridge was the busiest border crossing for cars in 2012 and the third-busiest for trucks.
