LANDOVER, Md. (CBSDC) — The magical run of 2012 is officially history. There will be no encore for the Washington Redskins this year.
Mike Shanahan’s team was officially eliminated from postseason contention following Sunday night’s 24-17 loss to the New York Giants, dashing any far fetched hopes Robert Griffin III could pull magic out of his hat once more.
With a quarter of the season still to be played, as a whole Washington will be playing for pride while individual players will be auditioning to keep their jobs. Neither players nor coaches were quick to say they’d phone it in for the rest of the year.
Here are a few quotes on how the Redskins plan to approach the final four games of the 2013 season.
Mike Shanahan: “It’s disappointing. That’s what you are playing for. That’s the one reason you play this game – to get to the playoffs. It gives you an opportunity to reach your goal. When you are out of it, it’s very disappointing. Now, you find out how guys step up and play the remainder of the season. You don’t like to play for pride, but sometimes that’s the card that is dealt. That’s where we’re at right now, and we’ll see which guys step up and play at a high level for the remaining games.”
Alfred Morris: “If you come in and you bust your butt every day you come in, you put all these hours in and work so hard and you don’t get the result that you want, of course it’s going to be hard to face that. It makes it a tough pill to swallow. It makes it very difficult. It can be hard to continue to find something to keep you going, especially when things aren’t going your way. It’s tough, but we’ve just got to find a way to get it done. [We’ll] go back to the drawing board tomorrow, review the film, figure out what we messed up at and try to get better.”
Brian Orakpo: “We have to not quit, continue to play with confidence and see what we have. Obviously, it’s not going to be a winning season for us, but we have four games to show that we’re not going to lie down for anyone. We’re going to go out there and continue to play as if we’re making the playoffs. Hopefully, we can ruin other teams’ playoff chances. That’s our motivation right now.”
Santana Moss: “It’s a job, it’s a job. I can’t quit. I wouldn’t quit if I was allowed to quit. So at the end of the day we know every week is going to be a different challenge. And if you [are] here, you’re here for a reason. You’re here because you know it isn’t always going to be peaches and cream. The ones that quit are no longer here. So at the end of the day you have to put this behind you no matter how tough it is, how tough it hurts, how stank it smells. You have to go out there and fight another week and that is all we can do.”
