LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) – The First Couple visited protesters in D.C. on Friday who have been fasting for the past few weeks in hopes to pressure Congress to pass new immigration laws.

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by the groups’ camp on the National Mall to show their support for the “Families for Families” campaign.

The protesters say they have given up all food except water for the past 18 days to draw attention to immigration reform measures pending on Capitol Hill.

President Obama has been pushing for changes to immigration over the past several months after a bipartisan Senate plan failed in the Republican-controlled House.

Organizers say the call for immigration reform in the nation’s capital “Will be joined nationwide by groups and activists who are prepared to make sacrifices for the passage of immigration reform with a path to citizenship.
