LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC/AP) – A U.S. Postal Service employee was fatally shot while making his rounds in a neighborhood in Landover, Md. Saturday night, police say.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1600 block of Reed Street in the Cheverly neighborhood around 7:30 p.m. When they arrived, Prince George’s County Police say they found 26-year-old Tyson Jerome Barnette, of Upper Marlboro, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Barnette was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are working to identify a suspect or suspects and a motive.

The National Association of Letter Carriers released a statement saying the incident shows the need for safety considerations in how and when mail is delivered.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Prince George’s County Crime Solves are offering a combined $125,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for Barnette’s murder.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 301-772-4925.
