Liberty (Va.) University Student Killed By Campus Police Officer
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Liberty University is operating as normal after officials say a campus police officer shot and killed a student at an off-campus dormitory.
The Lynchburg school said the shooting overnight Tuesday followed an altercation with the male student at the women’s-only residential hall. The incident is under investigation by the Lynchburg Police Department.
Police Lt. Dave Gearhart told The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1b5PP4H) that the “physical altercation” took place shortly before 4:15 a.m.
Gearhart said there was no ongoing concern for the safety of the students or the community. Police identified the student as 19-year-old Joshua Hathaway of Lubbock, Texas.
The Liberty University was founded in 1971 by the late Moral Majority leader Jerry Falwell. It has more than 12,600 students on campus and more than 90,000 online students.
