Capitol Police Union Criticizes Navy Yard Response

WASHINGTON — The union representing U.S. Capitol police officers is criticizing the agency’s management for its handling of the Washington Navy Yard shooting rampage.

A Capitol Police tactical squad tried to respond to the Navy Yard. But the officers couldn’t reach the command post there because of traffic snarls caused by emergency vehicles. An internal review concluded that it was reasonable to send them back to the Capitol because of possible threats there.

But the union says it wouldn’t have hurt security at the Capitol to allow four highly trained officers to assist at the Navy Yard. It says “the actions of Capitol Police management during this tragedy were questionable at best.”

The union says the report’s findings “appear biased and designed to protect the department from further scrutiny and possible litigation.”
