WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus stated that the GOP will win the 2014 midterm elections because they will “tattoo” the “toxic” state of Obamacare to Democrats’ foreheads.
In a discussion of the Virginia gubernatorial race, CNN’s Candy Crowley asked Priebus how he would advise Republican candidates to attract more women voters following the Democratic win last week. She showed the statistic that GOP candidate Ken Cuccinelli won 42 percent of the women’s vote in comparison to 51 percent taken by Democrat Terry McAuliffe.
Priebus responded that it is easy to “cherrypick” such statistics, going on to note that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie won the female and minority vote on a conservative ticket during last week’s gubernatorial election. Priebus also commented that Cuccinelli won the majority of married women’s votes, but lost out with single women under 35.
Priebus said that Obamacare will help close the gap as “single women are going to be losing their insurance. And that’s what happening all over the country.” He noted that over 300,000 people have lost their health coverage in Florida and said that President Barack Obama’s promise that Americans could keep their emergency health insurance plans was simply not true.
“And this issue is going to be toxic for the Democrats,” Priebus told CNN. “And believe me, we will tattoo it to their foreheads in 2014. We will run on it. And they will lose because of it.”
Democratic National Committee chair and Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz shot back at Priebus, telling CNN that Democrats would win 2014 midterm elections on the success of Obamacare.
“I think, actually, Candy, that Democratic candidates will be able to run on Obamacare as an advantage leading into the 2014 election,” Wasserman Schultz told CNN.
Wasserman Schultz said that “Americans reject the Tea Party extremism,” and will back Democrats as they feel the benefits of Obamacare moving into the future.
