Elderly Man Killed In College Park Fire That Destroyed Home

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — Fire officials say an elderly man was killed in a College Park house fire that destroyed the home early Sunday morning.

Just after 5 a.m., area firefighters responded to a multi-level home on the 5200 block of Palco Place.

Extreme congestion of materials stored in the house made it difficult for them to navigate inside, according to Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady.

Brady says the home was marked by “hoarder conditions” and was packed “floor to ceiling” with items.

An 80-year-old woman was able to get out of the two-story house. Fire officials say she was in serious but stable condition and suffering from smoke inhalation. She was transported to a local area hospital.

It took officials some time to find the man’s body. He is believed to be the 82-year-old homeowner. Officials say an autopsy is required to confirm the victim’s identity.

The blaze was brought under control around 6:45 a.m. About 100 personnel were on the scene.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.
