MINNEAPOLIS — American Indian activists and others plan to demonstrate against the Washington Redskins’ nickname ahead of the team’s game against the Minnesota Vikings Thursday night.

The groups plan to march to the Metrodome for a rally.

Six members of the Minneapolis City Council recently sent a letter to the team’s owner and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, calling the team’s nickname and mascot racist.

The D.C. Council also has called on the team to change its name.

Opponents contend the name is a racist slur. President Barack Obama recently said he would “think about changing” the name if he owned the team.

An Oneida Indian Nation radio ad calling for the team to change its name is scheduled to air in Minneapolis in the run-up to the game.
