Details of Fatal Police Shooting in Va. Released

PEARISBURG, Va. — Virginia State Police say officers exchanged gunfire with a robbery suspect several times during a chase before the man was killed.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says 32-year-old Jonathan Robertson of Narrows died Saturday evening.

Geller says a state police special agent and a Giles County sheriff’s deputy investigating a robbery and shooting came upon Robertson’s pickup truck stopped across a road on Saturday. Robertson shot at the officers and they returned fire.

Geller says Robertson fled and a male passenger in the pickup bailed out.

Robertson shot at officers again after a spike strip flattened tires on the truck. Geller says the pickup ran off the road in Pearisburg and there was another gunfire exchange. Robertson then was taken to a hospital, where he died.

No officer was injured.
