WASHINGTON — Cab drivers in the District of Columbia have formed an association affiliated with the Teamsters Union.
The nation’s capital has more than 6,000 independent cab drivers who work as owner-operators or lease their vehicles. Teamsters President Jim Hoffa says the association will pursue policies that are fair to those drivers and improve taxi service in Washington.
The district enacted a comprehensive taxicab reform measure last year. Among the requirements are that cabs are required to install credit-card readers and that they adopt a uniform color scheme.
The Teamsters say in a news release that those regulations have proven burdensome and expensive and that cab drivers want to have a stronger voice and more input on regulations before they take effect.
