RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia’s craft breweries are gaining national recognition after winning several awards at a national competition.

The awards were part of the festivities at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. The event is presented by the Brewers Association, the trade group for the majority of U.S. brewing companies.

Officials say more than 200 judges evaluated 4,800 beers and awarded 252 medals at the competition in 84 different categories.

Virginia breweries took home more than a dozen awards for their beers.

Lost Rhino in Ashburn, Port City in Alexandria, Three Brothers in Harrisonburg, Smartmouth in Norfolk and Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Nelson County were among the winners from Virginia.

Devils Backbone Brewing also received recognition as the Small Brewing Company and Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year.
