LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — District of Columbia police have made an arrest in the July 4 shooting death of a Howard University student Omar Sykes.

Police say Sykes, 22, was walking with another student when they were approached by two armed men around 11:30 p.m on Fairmont Street, near the campus in northwest Washington.

One of the men pulled out a gun and shot Sykes, police say. The other student was beaten and suffered non-life threatening injuries during the attempted robbery.

On Tuesday, Rasdavid Lagarde, 26, was taken into custody by a fugitive task force around 9:45 a.m. He is charged with first degree felony murder while armed in the death of Sykes.

At the time of the shooting, authorities said they believed the shooting was a random encounter.
