WASHINGTON — Some city services will be suspended in Washington in observance of Columbus Day. The holiday may also serve as a preview of what’s to come if the federal government shutdown continues.

The city’s Department of Public Works says there will be no parking enforcement or trash collection on Monday. But both services could be suspended again because of the shutdown. The District of Columbia is barred from spending local tax dollars without approval by Congress, and the city has been using emergency funds to continue operating. Those funds are expected to run out sometime this week.

If the money runs out and the city government shuts down, parking enforcement would be suspended, and trash collection would be cut back to once every two weeks.
