LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) – As of Friday, the D.C. Department of Employment Services has processed 14,500 claims for furloughed federal employees since Oct. 1st.
The District continues to process claims for unemployment insurance despite the possibility that the system could run out of funds to make the payments.
Nayla Haywood, a spokesperson for the D.C. D.O.E.S., tells WNEW Senior Correspondent Mark Segraves the funds to pay the unemployment claims come from the federal government. Haywood says the U.S. Department of Labor has instructed D.C. to continue to process claims and that the D.O.L. will continue to fund those claims until further notice.
