LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A group of ‘gas-roots’ truckers plan to demonstrate their general frustration with the current state of the federal government by organizing a convoy on the Capital Beltway.
Truckers are being asked to meet at a travel plaza off I-95 exit 98 in Doswell, Va., near King’s Dominion and decorate their rigs with Constitution-related signs and old glory flags.
The event will begin at 7 a.m. Friday, during the morning rush hour. Sgt. Mark Black, spokesman for the Maryland State Police, says authorities are aware of the planned demonstration and are prepared to handle it. Virginia State Police have not yet returned a call for comment.
The convoy will kick off a weekend that has been declared by the group to be a “general strike,” during which they will not haul freight.
“The only thing that motivates every politician is their money — cutting off their money flow cuts off their life-blood,” the group wrote in a media release. “The Independent Truckers in the United States essentially keep commerce flowing for benefit of the Central Government. The only way to get our legislators to operate lawfully and Constitutionally is to penalize them with a credible threat of a shutdown.”
There are many names associated with the weekend-long display, including “Ride for the Constitution” and “Truckers to Shutdown America.”
The Overpasses for Obama’s Impeachment group announced on its Facebook page that members will be cheering on the truckers as they make their way to the D.C. area.
