Va. Couple Charged After 4-Year-Old Shoots Self
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — A Fredericksburg woman and her boyfriend are facing charges after the woman’s 4-year-old son shot himself through the hand.
The Free Lance-Star reports (http://bit.ly/1coOczx) police were called to Mary Washington Hospital around 2:20 p.m. on Sunday after 29-year-old Melissa Pendleton got a neighbor to bring her and her children to the hospital after the incident. Police say nobody called 911.
The child is expected to recover.
Pendleton and her live-in boyfriend, 31-year-old Jemmell Conway, were charged with felony child neglect and a misdemeanor charge of allowing a child to have access to a firearm.
Conway also was charged with possessing a firearm as a felon. He is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. Pendleton was jailed under a $2,500 bond.
The victim and his 8-year-old brother were visiting their mother for the weekend. Police say the children’s father is dead, and they live with their paternal grandparents.
City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe says police were told the boy got ahold of the gun and shot himself. Police are investigating the incident.
