RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Republican Ken Cuccinelli is getting a hero’s welcome at a Saturday gala for the socially conservative Family Foundation, stoking his most avid base of support and sharing billing with another conservative star, Sen. Ted Cruz.
The joint appearance also energized Democrats and abortion- and gay-rights activists, scores of whom rallied outside Richmond’s Convention Center.
Cuccinelli used his brief moment at the podium to flail the new health overhaul law he and Cruz deride as “Obamacare” and blast the Democratic White House and his Democratic opponent, Terry McAuliffe, for supporting environmental regulations he says amount to a war on coal.
Cruz, R-Texas, is a leading Senate proponent of using the stalled congressional funding fight to dismantle the health care law.
