President Obama Cancels Asia Trip Because Of Shutdown

WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – President Obama has cancelled the rest of his planned trip to Asia because of the government shutdown.

Obama was going to leave this weekend to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Indonesia and the ASEAN and East Asia Summits in Brunei.

In a statement, spokesman Jay Carney said the president phoned the leaders of both countries to extend his regrets and to reaffirm U.S. ties in the Asian Pacific region.

Secretary of State John Kerry will go instead.

Planned trips to Malaysia and the Philippines had already been cancelled.

The White House says while the president remains in Washington, he will keep up public pressure on Republicans to end the standoff.
