LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Inspired by Thursday’s deadly police chase and shooting near the U.S. Capitol, former District of Columbia Mayor Adrian Fenty is raising money for Capitol Police Officers who are still on the job despite not receiving paychecks due to the shutdown of the federal government.
Fenty praised the heroics of the officers involved in the incident before pointing out they were currently unpaid.
“As the tragic violence unfolded at the Capitol this afternoon in my beautiful hometown, I was following closely and holding my breath,” he wrote on the fundraising page. “The entire lockdown situation was horrific, but the Capitol Police acted incredibly courageously.”
“The police officers might receive their salaries in several weeks if the shutdown ends, but they definitely aren’t getting paid on schedule and several have sustained injuries.”
Fenty has pledged $1,000 of his own funds and will donate another $1,000 if a public fundraising goal of $5,000 is met.
The former mayor is soliciting donations on the fundraising website CrowdTilt.com.
Fenty, 42, served as mayor of the District for one term (2007-11) before losing the Democratic primary to current mayor Vincent Gray.
He currently resides in California and is reportedly dating Laurene Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
