WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — A fire broke out on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge shutting down all westbound lanes on Sunday afternoon.
Queen Anne’s County Fire officials received the call shortly after 6 p.m. for black smoke appearing from under the westbound area of the bridge.
Authorities say the fire started when a portable generator under the bridge caught fire. No injuries have been reported.
Fire engines quickly extinguished the flames from underneath the bridge and fire boats examined the structure of the Bay Bridge for any falling debris.
Authorities remained on the scene to check for any remaining safety issues before opening the bridge once again.
All lanes reopened around 8 p.m., but drivers were asked to be patient during delays in the area as traffic began clearing up.
