Relationship with Shanahan Could Have Led Peyton Manning to Redskins

by Chris Lingebach

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – How close did Peyton Manning come to playing for the Washington Redskins?

In an interview with 106.7 The Fan’s Holden and Danny, Archie Manning, his father, was asked about the possibility of Peyton signing with the Redskins as he was being wined and dined around the NFL, after being released by the Colts in 2012.

“Well I know this, he and Mike Shanahan are mighty good friends,” Manning said on Wednesday. “And I can’t tell you what a good friend Mike Shanahan and his family and how nice they’ve been to Peyton. I mean, Peyton and Ashley [Peyton’s wife], when he went to Denver, I mean they lived in [Shanahan’s] house out there.”

“So yea, I think if Peyton thought through the years a lot of times, if he ever did change teams, Mike Shanahan would be one of these coaches, and of course he thinks a lot of Kyle too, would be one of these coaches he’d want to play for.”

“But you know, it was just kind of the way that the cards were dealt,” the elder Manning continued. “What was going on, you know, kind of with these new quarterbacks — Indy getting a new one, Redskins getting a new one.  So it worked out. I think he made a good choice.”
