Woman Dies in Fire at Elderly Community in Silver Spring

SILVER SPRING, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — A woman died in a fire at a building in a Silver Spring senior citizens community Wednesday, officials said.

The fire broke out just before 12:30 p.m. in the ninth floor of a 10-story building in the Leisure World Community, located in the 15700 block of Interlachen Drive, Montgomery County Assistant Fire Chief Scott Graham said.

Police have not yet released the identity of the woman, who was a Leisure World resident.

More than 75 firefighters were called to the scene battle the two-alarm blaze but none were injured, officials said. The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes.

Montgomery County fire investigators are working to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

Leisure World is a private, age-restricted, gated community. About 8,500 people live in the community, according to its website.
