ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A legislative panel in Maryland has voted to approve regulations needed to implement the state’s sweeping gun-control law, which takes effect next month.

The General Assembly’s Joint Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review Committee voted 9-7 on Monday to approve the regulations.

While lawmakers passed the measure earlier this year, the panel still needed to sign off on some specific regulations to implement the law.

For example, the regulations call for specific safety training that will be needed for people to buy firearms. The state police have included stipulations to require the actual firing of a gun as part of the safety training.

Vincent DeMarco, president of Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence, says Monday’s vote is a milestone in getting the law implemented on Oct. 1.
