LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Members of the Prince George’s County Fire Department participated in Red Bull’s Flugtag event at Southpointe Waterfront in D.C. Saturday.

It was the first time the annual event was held in the District.

Thirty teams, including one made up of the five local firefighters, came from states across the northeast to pilot their homemade flying machines off a 28-foot high flight deck.

“Company pride is a big part of the brotherhood that we stand for,” according to a statement on the team’s website. “Driving a new fire truck into the water and not having to pay for the damages…….what firefighter wouldn’t want to do that?”

The team’s flying machine was designed to look like a fire apparatus.

The first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Austria in 1992. The contest came to the United States in 2002.
