LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — The Washington Capitals will host the 2015 NHL Winter Classic, but an exact venue for the annual outdoor hockey contest is unclear.
The news of an outdoor game was first reported by 106.7 The Fan’s Sky Kerstein on Thursday.
A source familiar with the plans confirmed the news to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis is expected to make a formal announcement Saturday.
Leonsis has lobbied to host the game for several years. The Capitals played in the 2011 game as the visiting team against Pittsburgh.
The D.C. area has several potential sites to host the game, including Nationals Park, RFK Stadium and FedEx Field.
The NHL is holding a series of four outdoor games this season, including one at Dodger Stadium in Los Angles and a pair at New York’s Yankee Stadium, in addition to the traditional Winter Classic.
The Washington Post was first to report Washington’s outdoor game would be the Winter Classic.
