COLLEGE PARK, Md. (CBSDC) — Traffic on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway was backed up for seven miles following a massive tractor-trailer fire in College Park early Friday morning.
The tractor-trailer collided with an unattended vehicle around 4:45 a.m. on the exit to Route 1, a short distance from the I-95 merge with the inner loop.
WNEW was first at the scene of the accident and has obtained exclusive video of the blaze minutes after the collision.
The blaze forced authorities to close the heavily trafficked exit for nearly three hours as firefighters worked to extinguish flames.
Police at the scene say another car appears to have gotten in the way of the tractor-trailer, causing it to strike the unattended car. The tractor-trailer caught fire almost immediately, WNEW has learned. The disabled car also caught on fire.
The flames completely gutted the tractor-trailer, leaving only a shell of a truck behind. The truck’s cargo, cardboard and wooden palettes, appear to have fueled the inferno.
The driver of the truck was not injured in the incident.
The stalled vehicle also suffered substantial fire damage.
