Amateur Canadian Football Club Drops Redskins Name

OTTAWA, Canada — An amateur Canadian football club is dropping its Redskins name and logo because some fans find them racist.

Nepean Redskins President Steve Dean said Thursday the change comes after mounting pressure from critics. The change will be announced Friday. A new name, logo and colors will be chosen after the season in November.

Dean says in a statement the Ottawa team “understands that the current name is offensive to some, and thus divisive to our community.” He says the full transformation is expected to cost more than $100,000 and may take years.

The decision comes weeks after Ottawa musician Ian Campeau of the band A Tribe Called Red filed a human rights complaint. On Thursday, Campeau posted a triumphant “WE DID IT!!!” on Twitter.

A push to change the name of the NFL’s Washington Redskins has gained momentum this year.
